The main aim of the project is to produce educational materials that highlight the relevance of this important reaction in synthetic chemistry to make heterocyclic molecules, many of which are useful in making drugs. The educational theme could go in a number of directions: making relevant drugs and/or using examples to educate about spectroscopy. The later could be explored through using different alkenes (or even alkynes) in the standard 3,3-diphenylisoxazoline reaction. For example, using one or more of the following alkenes could make different isoxazolines that would have variations in the NMR spectra - 1D and 2D (and even FTIR) that would make interesting educational comparisons to styrene (Ar-CH=CH2): trans-beta-methylstyrene Ar-CH=CH(CH3), alpha-methylstyrene Ar-CH(CH3)=CH2, (E)-stilene Ar-CH=CH-Ar (trans), and (Z)-stilbene Ar-CH=CH2-Ar (cis). As well as producing interesting NMR spectra, some interesting mixtures of isomers may result.

Prices, respectively, from Sigma are: £27 for 1 g, £13.90 for 100 ml, £32.20 for 25 g, £15.40 for 1 g.
